Third-party inspection is an independent examination of equipment, structures, materials or products by an organisation that is neither the owner or manufacturer nor the buyer. Because the inspector has no commercial interest in the result, the report gives owners, clients, insurers and authorities objective evidence that an asset is safe and fit for purpose.

First, second and third-party inspection

Why businesses need third-party inspection

What can be inspected

Common inspection services include lifting equipment, lifting gear and accessories, pressure equipment, storage tanks, scaffolding, earth-moving machinery, electrical systems and PAT testing, personal protective equipment, marine assets, amusement rides, anchor bolt pull-out testing, torque testing and non-destructive testing (NDT).

How a third-party inspection works

  1. Scope – the equipment list, location and the standard or specification to inspect against are agreed.
  2. Document review – manufacturer certificates, previous reports and maintenance records are checked.
  3. Examination – visual and functional checks, measurements and, where required, load tests or NDT.
  4. Report – findings, defects and a pass or fail result for each item, with the date of the next inspection.
  5. Follow-up – defective items are repaired or withdrawn and re-inspected before use.

How often equipment should be inspected

Inspection frequency depends on the type of equipment, the regulation or standard that applies, the manufacturer’s instructions, how intensively it is used and what your client’s contract requires. Lifting accessories, for example, are usually examined more often than the cranes they are used with – see lifting equipment vs lifting gear inspection.
