“Lifting equipment” and “lifting gear” are often used interchangeably, but they are inspected differently. Knowing which is which helps you plan inspections, keep certificates in order and avoid equipment being stopped on site.
Lifting equipment (lifting appliances)
Machines that raise and lower loads: mobile cranes, tower cranes, overhead and gantry (EOT) cranes, hoists and winches, telehandlers, forklift trucks and mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs).
Lifting gear (lifting accessories)
Items placed between the machine and the load: wire rope, chain, webbing and round slings, shackles, hooks, eyebolts, lifting clamps, beam clamps, spreader and lifting beams.
How often are they examined?
The interval depends on the regulation or standard your project follows, the manufacturer’s instructions and how the equipment is used. A widely referenced benchmark is the UK’s LOLER regulations, which require a thorough examination:
| Item | Typical maximum interval (LOLER benchmark) |
|---|---|
| Lifting accessories (slings, shackles, hooks) | 6 months |
| Equipment used to lift people (e.g. MEWPs, man-baskets) | 6 months |
| Other lifting equipment (cranes, hoists, forklifts) | 12 months |
Equipment should also be examined after installation, after major repair or modification, and after any event that could affect its safety. Many clients and main contractors set their own, stricter intervals – always check the project requirements.
Thorough examination vs pre-use checks
A thorough examination is a detailed, documented examination by a competent, independent person, sometimes with load testing or NDT. Pre-use checks are quick visual checks by the operator or rigger before each use. Both are needed; one does not replace the other.
Colour coding and tags
Many sites use a periodic colour code or inspection tag to show that accessories are within their inspection period. The colour scheme varies between clients, so confirm which one applies on your site.
What the report should show
- Unique identification and description of each item
- Safe working load (SWL / WLL)
- Date of examination and date the next one is due
- Defects found and whether the item is safe to use
- Name of the competent person and inspection body
